The Statue of Liberty

Ah, New York. The home of Wall Street, the Empire State building, and the setting for the Percy Jackson books. Oh, and of course, the Statue of Liberty. This one needs no introduction (but for the purpose of this blog, I will be giving one). It is, as the name states, a symbol of liberty and a symbol of democracy, a symbol of the free world. It is a symbol of justice, fairness, and a symbol of the American dream. A simple look at it can fill you up with hope. It’s basically like a real-life Superman, minus the powers … Continue reading The Statue of Liberty

A Letter from the Trenches in WW1

This is a letter of a British soldier’s life in the First World War. It touches upon the industrial revolution, the different technologies present and how the day generally passes. The names and likeness of all people mentioned are fictional. 18th May 1918 Dear Mum and Dad, It was pleasing to receive your letter after so long. I am getting my salary soon, and I am going to send it over to home. … Continue reading A Letter from the Trenches in WW1

The Greek Story of Creation

As a student of history, I have read countless creation stories, and the Greek’s version Creation is my favourite. This is because it is probably the most action packed, and would break the box office if a movie was made out of this. The Beginning In the beginning, there was nothing but emptiness, Gap as the Greeks called it, and a primordial being called Chaos came into existence. Chaos was kind of like a soupy mist that just floated around in nothingness. Then came Gaia (the Earth), Tartarus (the pit below the Earth), and Eros (the embodiment of Love). These … Continue reading The Greek Story of Creation

The Roman Senate

The Roman Senate. A governing body controlling what was to become the most powerful and populous empire in history. This was a group of people who were Rome’s most powerful, rich, and influential people. They controlled everything from the public offices and the army. Basically, you did not want to get on their wrong side of these dudes. Origins The word “senate” originates from the Latin word “senex” which literally means “old man”. Personally, I believe the reason for this was to justify the members of the Senate, who were usually old men, since they were considered to be the … Continue reading The Roman Senate

The Odyssey

The following is a book review of The Odyssey. It is the follow up of the Iliad, where the hero Odysseus gets stranded on his way home and undergoes a series of adventures and challenges. The book, like the Iliad, is authored by Homer. Plot The main plot of the book is the journey of the hero Odysseus as he returns home to the island of Ithica after the Trojan War. It took him 20 years to get home, and even after getting home he had to remain like a beggar for a few weeks. Thus, this book gave rise … Continue reading The Odyssey
